Chapter Thirteen

Rick drove down US Highway 98 towards Sandestin. Chief was on his mind, and the gravity of the entire event replayed over and over. He wished he had brought Chief to the condo instead of leaving him with Johnie on Nine-Tenths. There was no going back and he had to accept it. He tried to put on a strong front, but thinking of Chief brought tears to his eyes, and it took all he had to keep it together.

He stopped at the Donut Hole to hopefully help him stop worrying about Chief. He ordered a chocolate angel and thumbed through a 30A magazine. The magazine featured celebrities and the upper crust of the redneck riviera from Panama City to Destin. He flipped pages just to kill time, not paying much attention to what he was looking at. He didn’t hang out with those people in the pages but knew who some of them were. He spotted the mayor of Destin and some of the area’s biggest movers and shakers.

As he continued to flip pages, something caught his eye. A photo of a woman receiving an award at a gala held at the Emerald Coast Theatre Company. As he looked closer, he recognized Pamela. It was no surprise to see her in the magazine, but what was shocking was the woman standing behind her. It was hard to make out and they were a little out of focus, but it was obvious the woman behind her had her palm in the small of Pamela’s back. The woman was wearing a long, dark blue flowing gown and had bright red hair.

He kept scanning the photos of the gala, and toward the bottom of the last page of the story, he spotted her again, holding up a champagne glass by the bar with several other people. The man in the forefront of the photo was named and the others were just in the background. But she was in focus this time. Rick held his iPhone close to the photo and snapped a picture. He pulled up the photo, cropped her face in the center, and saved it. After opening Google image search, he uploaded the cropped photo and instantly got a hit. Her name was Michelle Tangier. He did a search of her name and found out she was a popular local realtor. He did a deeper search of her on Facebook and Instagram and saw she was always with women. He went to her About section on her Facebook profile page and then to her Basic Info, and it said she was interested in women.

Bingo! She might be a love interest of Pamela.

“Here ya go, honey. Can I get you anything else?” asked the woman behind the counter.

“Nope, this oughta do it.”

After a quick stop at Chevron for a tall boy, he drove over the Destin bridge and glanced down at Crab Island. Over fifty boats were already anchored there. It was a beautiful day with not a cloud in the sky.
